Hi there! My name is James and I’m an optimistic nihilist who thinks a lot and designs stuff sometimes.
I think that my medium-spicy set of design skills combined with a steadfast moral backbone that I find to be disappointingly rare in the design industry puts me in a unique and exciting spot in the universe. I am on a journey to arrive at a place where I can help make an impact while not making sacrifices to our planet, people, and cultures. My ultimate goal is to do all this while still being a chill and enjoyable person to be around.
I was raised by two designers in a suburban New Jersey town nicknamed “Brooklyn West”. Growing up I was surrounded by art and design. I was known across the Tri-State Area as the "bad boy" of the New York City art museum scene because my mom and dad would frequently take me to museums but the trips inevitably ended with my brother and I getting scolded by security for running around pinching each other. In sixth grade I asked for a pair of custom yellow, blue, and black Nikes (later nicknamed the "James Gall Limited's") for Christmas. At the time I didn’t realize the connection between what became an obsession with sneakers and my parents’ careers and interests. When it was time to apply to college I was spending more money than I currently possess on shoes, so going to school to potentially design sneakers as a job sold me pretty quickly on industrial design.
But it wasn’t until I started at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning (DAAP for short) that I fully linked what I wanted to do with my life to all of the museum trips and weird posters around my house. In college and through my Co-op experience I met some absolutely incredible people who encouraged me to think about the world in a truly unique way. Now, I’m not quite sure where my career will take me but am always seeking to try new things and channel my interests into something more meaningful.
